indigenous peoples of the Mato Grosso wetlands. The caraguat is
a plant species related to the pineapple, its long and
pointed leaves growing up to six feet. It can usually
be found in rainforest clearings, where it forms an almost
impregnable natural barrier for humans and livestock, serving as protection
for smaller animals such as boars and coatis. The residents
of this undeveloped region utilize caraguat fibers to create bags,
belts, hammocks, and fishing nets. After stripping the leaves, the
artisans weave together the fibers and wash the cords in
the rivers current. They follow a calendar that determines the
appropriate amount of time for washing and drying, based on
the phases of the moon. The result is a fiber
