'Iguana,' mask Home Decor Masks Mexican Archaeological Masks 
The personage represented in the handsome mask
wears a diadem low on the forehead and earrings in
the form of seashells. An iguana forms part of his
features, curving sinuously from eyebrows to mouth. Ismael Diaz creates
this original design inspired by ancestral Mexican deities from the
pre-Hispanic past. The talented artisan began working with clay as
a young boy. Aided by his wife, he casts the
clay in molds before firing the piece and applying acrylic
paints. The rustic texture is achieved by baths of earth,
giving the mask an authentically antique appearance. Because each mask
is individually hand-crafted, there may be slight variations in color
and dimensions. However, this only enhances and confirms the originality
of the piece.
