Wood statuette, 'Dursasana' Art Gallery Sculpture Wood - Buddhism Hinduism Spirituality ![]()
Regally attired in elegant clothing, Dursasana reflects on his enemies.
Immortalized in the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Dursasana is one of
the 100 Korawa brothers, a cousin of Panca Pandawa. Like
his brother Duryodana, he is a cruel and evil character.
The Mahabharata recounts the struggle for supremacy between two groups
of cousins, the Korawas and the Pandawas. War became inevitable,
as accumulated supernatural powers escalated the fervor. The story climaxes
on the Kurusetra battlefield, where the Pandawa brothers confront their
evil cousins. Krishna, the most beloved figure in Hinduism, fought
for the Pandawas, leading Arjuna's chariot into battle. Dursasana is
skilfully portrayed by Nyoman Subrata. Sculpted in native crocodile wood,
the exquisite statuette is a tribute to Bali's rich cultural
legacy. Subrata is an artisan whose expertise stems from
years of family tradition. His imagination and skill are evident
in the flawless workmanship and intricate detailing of the sculpture.
"I thank God for giving me a chance to be
an artist, because I find my most excellent time working
on artwork," Subrata says with gratitude.
