Cowry shells adorn this dancer who depicts Oxossi. A Candombl orix (god), he embodies the energy of the earth and of earthquakes. Song and dance are a form of worship and the dance impersonates the god. The name derives from kandombele, a Congolese-Angolan word meaning "to pray." Practiced in Brazil since slaves were brought over from Africa by the Portuguese, Candombl combines Yoruban practices with Roman Catholic imagery. Hugo Negrini crafts an image that is both beautiful and ethnographically correct.
