Wood statuette, 'Winata Goddess' Art Gallery Sculpture Wood - Buddhism Hinduism Spirituality ![]()
According to mythology, the goddess Winata and
her sister, Gadru, were unable to bear children, so they
solicited the help of the ratu pedanda (high priest), who
granted Gadru 1,000 eggs, while giving Winata only two. When
the eggs hatched, Gadrus were born nagas (serpents) while Winatas
were eagles, one of which was born weak and thin.
The strong eagle was named Garuda, and he later became
the vehicle for Lord Vishnu. The weaker one, Aruna, feasted
upon the nagas until only two were left, which eventually
grew up to become the great Nagas of the underworld.
Aruna grew strong by feeding on the serpents, thus representing
how the lower realm nourishes the higher. Wayan Rendah portrays
Winata contemplating one of her eggs, as he carves rich
details from the beauty of sono wood.
