Madhubani painting, 'Rejoicing' (triptych) Art Gallery Paintings View by Region India Madhubani ![]()
A host of
villagers and their animals celebrate harvest time in this exquisite
Madhubani triptych by Bharti Dayal. Joining hands, they are arranged
in the repetitive imagery that characterizes this legendary art form.
A wondrous composition inspired by the Mithila tradition, the paintings
exalt the sublime harmony existing between all those who live
on Earth. Painted on handmade paper, the paintings are mounted
on card for protection. Proud of her artistic heritage, Dayal
follows in the steps of her mother and grandmother -
creating fantastic works of art reminiscent of paintings found in
the houses and temples of the past. Dayal hails from
Mithila (Bihar), a scholastic and cultural center in ancient India,
that traces its artistic lineage from epic times. Mithila paintings,
alternately called Madhubani, are a folk tradition kept alive by
women in Bihar. They draw traditional designs and depict events
from epic mythology on the floors and walls of their
houses using crushed wet rice and natural colors. From this
age old tradition stemmed the practice of drawing Mithila paintings
on a canvas of hand-made paper or pure mulberry silk
fabric, using natural colors and fabric dyes. Brushes, sharpened reeds,
and pen nibs are used to draw the designs and
figurations. Now Dayal works with the intention of resurfacing traditional
themes in Mithila paintings while at the same time blending
contemporary ideas.
