'Minti Saa Mimu,' mask Home Decor Masks Masks of Ghana - Other Tribes ![]()
This horror mask entitled
Minti Saa Mimu, meaning "I'm not that ugly on the
inside," should not be viewed as ghastly, but rather as
a commentary on the error of superficiality. Carved from sese
wood, its undulating contours will captivate any setting. Designed by
Madam Adwoa, these masks are sculpted by the skilled artisans
of Onyame Akwan Dooso, her Ghanaian workshop. West African masks
have evolved from many influences, incorporating historical, cultural, ritual, and
personal factors. They speak the language of a tribe, ethnicity,
or cultural entity, expressing ideas both within the group and
to those belonging to other peoples and communities. Madam Adwoa
translates these themes using local sese wood as her material
inspiration.
