Nilapat ("the black-faced one") is the simian Lord of Death and a hero of the Ramayana. According to this great epic, Nilapat transformed himself into a bridge so Rama could cross over the sea and rescue his abducted wife. Decha crafts an expressive version of Nilapat. Thailand's version of the Ramayana is the "Ramakian." The epic legend is in essence the same but since Thailand is of Buddhist faith, the main character Rama, is regarded as Buddha in a previous life.
