Leather shadow puppet, 'Arjuna the Lover' Toys Games Shadow & Theater Puppets ![]()
The courage and valor of Arjuna is magnificently captured
in this stunning puppet by master puppeteer Made Suwita. Arjuna
is an outstanding archer and loved by many women. He
is the third of the Panca Pandawa brothers, each one
symbolizing universal virtues: Yudistira (truth), Bima (right conduct), Arjuna (love),
Nakula (peace), and Sahadewa (non-violence). As a master puppeteer
or 'dalang,' Suwita hand-crafts the puppets he uses for his
storytelling, which revolves around themes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata
epics. He starts by sketching the desired figure unto leather
and then proceeds to carve it. Suwita uses acrylic paints
to outline the figure in the most exacting detail before
setting the puppet on a coffee stick. In Bali,
the puppet shows take place inside a box, called 'gedog.'
The 'dalang' will sing his story and is accompanied by
four gamelan players. At the same time, the puppeteer beats
the box with a wooden stick held in his toes
to add emphasis and rhythm.
