Wood statuette, 'The Princess and the Ogre' Art Gallery Sculpture Wood - Buddhism Hinduism Spirituality ![]()
Leering in triumph, the evil Rahwana carries away his prize
- the beautiful princess, Sita. The great Hindu epic Ramayana
tells the story of Rama, the seventh incarnation of the
god Vishnu, who eventually wins the hand of Sita in
marriage. Displaced as rightful heir to his father's throne, Rama
goes into exile with Sita and his brother Lakshmana but,
while in exile in the forest, Sita is abducted by
Rahwana, the lust-driven ogre king. Aided by the monkey general
Hanoman, Rama searches for Sita and slays Rahwana, rescuing his
wife. After his success, he soon returns to his rightful
place as king. Sculpted in rich, dark sono wood by
Nyoman Subrata, the exquisite statuette pays tribute to Bali's rich
cultural legacy. Subrata is an artisan whose expertise stems
from years of family tradition. His imagination and skill are
evident in the flawless workmanship and intricate detailing of the
sculpture. "I thank God for giving me a chance to
be an artist, because I find my most excellent time
working on artwork," Subrata says with gratitude. This item
is individually carved by hand and belongs to a special
collection created by the artist.
